    a) The book is written in first person.

    b) Elijah isn't really described because he is the narrator, and who in their right mind would go on and on just describing themselves? His mother does judge him in the sense that she thinks he is fragile, which he has admitted is true. it gives him a very human description, so you don't just think that he is perfect because he is describing himself.

    2.

    a) I think that I would have liked to know more about his parents. They seem to say that they shouldn't be mean to former slaves, but aren't they former slaves as well?? I would just like to know more about their past. Also, I wish that the parents were more included in the story.

    b) It would have gave Elijah a little more back round to his personality and maybe explain some of the choices he makes. Also, if his parents were in the story more, we could tell more about what he is dealing with and any personal struggles because so far, the main conflict hasn't appeared.

    3.

    a) There are many different messages. The main one thought is self-control.

    b)
    1. When Elijah almost says a very offensive word to Mr. leroy, he stops midway. Then Mr. Leroy slaps him to the ground. Mr. leroy then gives him a lecture on slavery. This shows that if you don't have self control, you may hurt peoples feeling because even if you weren't aware, there are things you can do in life that may not seem offensive to you, but can really hurt someone else. pg. 96-100

    4.

    a) You can know more details about the characters back round and you will be able to read more details about the character. It is hard to write details about the main character if the main character is narrating. If the author wants a more detailed book, they would probably choose 3rd person.

    b) Like I said above, it is harder to add in details. Even so, I prefer 1st person because then you feel like you are teh character and you can write in internal thinking.

    5. 170

    6. The word is prestidigitation, which are magic tricks preformed in public. The part of speech is a noun and it has 6 syllables.

    7. I think that Preacher will steal some of Mr. leroy's money because Preacher has been acting suspicious and the back said that someone (Preacher) will steal money from one of Elijah's friends (Mr. Leroy) who is trying to buy his family out of slavery.

  3. 1a. The book is in third person.

1b. The author is giving details for the setting, in her opinion. As well with the main character. She is giving her idea of what all this is described as, and where these objects are or people.

2a. The author doesn't give much detail to Peters sister, Lovisa, and so she is described that much about her personality traits. There isn't anything about her friends except for Helga, and there isn't anything about the way she dresses.

2b. Lovisa would be more involved in the action, and would be a character who stands out. That would give more of a visual to her appearance.

3a. The message is that you need other troops to help you along the way, to achieve the goal that you are heading towards. Fairness, you have to be fair, and talk things out, not just steal things. This is a message because the Germans were really unfair.

3b. The Germans even gave a curfew, so if you don't get to your house before sunset, you will get shot. Page #119. You need all your troops, because all the children had to help out with pulling the gold over to the snowman. Peter can't do it on his own, and he for sure learned that. Page #114.

4a. The advantage is that lots of setting is described, and other characters. There is more detail so that you can get more of a visual to what you are reading.

4b. The disadvantage about 1st person, is that there isn't so much description going on in the whole book. The setting isn't described that well.

    5. I am on page #136.

    6. Disinfectant- a chemical liquid that destroys bacteria. It is a noun, and 4 syllables.

    7. I predict that Uncle Victor, and Peter are going to catch up, and discuss more about the plans. Peter is going to tell him about the spy, and Uncle Victor might already know. Then, a new plan will be built up.

    3. They could have added who their parents names where and if they go to school and where they do the kite fighting

2b. It could have made the characters talk about their family more then they have already

3a I haven't got to where the theme is really shown but I think it's caring

3b. On page 33 the 2 brothers always help each other launch their kites and on page 15 Young-sup asks his brother if he can make a kite for him and he says that he would help him make a kite with him not for him

    4a. I don't think there's any difference

    5. 170

    6. The only word that our whole group found was prestidigitation, which basically means performing magic tricks in the public. It's a noun and it has six syllables.

    7. Our group predicts that the Preacher will steal money from My. Leroy and Cooter, who is Elijah's best friend. We thought that he would steal the money because the Preacher has been acting REALLY suspicious about stealing four of Elijah's fish, sneaking Elijah to a carnival his parents won't let him go, and finding a mystery pistol that nobody knows where he got it.

    3rd person limited
    3rd person omniscient
    first person ✓
    second person

    b) How does that point of view influence how the main character and setting are described?
Because the setting is describe how the main character could describe it. Ex. If he has a small vocabulary then it is harder for him to describe it with detail. Or if he isn't very observant, than there might not be a lot of mention of the setting.

    a) Is there any unknown information to the main character that could’ve been added?
If the author had added more about the history of the town and about Elijahs parents that would make the story easier to understand.

    b) How would that information changed the story?
It might change the story because you might notice and understand some things in the book that you might not have if you didn't know these things, or you might learn something, like you might learn that it is important that Elijah is the first freeborn slave in the Settlement for a totally different reason than you expected.
