R AND R

Parent/Child Blogger kicks off tonight. I'm looking forward to seeing what you have to say on these important character education topics: RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY. Share the work load.

Accepting responsibility for our mistakes can be a difficult thing to do. Many adults and children struggle with accepting responsibility when they make a mistake. Sometimes we struggle with being respectful toward others.

1. Describe a moment when you did not accept responsibility for your actions? Describe a moment when you were disrespectful toward someone?

2. Write down what you think this quote means: "We are free up to the point of choice, then the choice controls the chooser."

3. Look at these RESPONSIBLE CHOICES. Try to come up with a least one possible consequence for 3 out of the 5 choices.

  • going to college vs. not going to college
  • eating healthful food vs. eating a regular diet of junk food
  • making friends with someone who's not very popular vs. not making friends with the person
  • doing a random act of kindness vs. not making the effort
  • joining a social club vs. hanging out with friends
4. Can you think of a non-family member who demonstrates responsibility and makes good choices?

56 comments:

  1. 1. One time, I forgot to feed my dog, and when my Mom asked me about it I said I fed her but she already ate it. Also, I disrespected my mom when I stayed up until 12:00 AM reading and talking with my sister.
    2. I think it means that you can do whatever you want until you make the choice, and the choice makes you choose other things, so it is like the choice is controlling you, even though you are free anyway.
    3. If you don't go to college, you won't be hired for many things which delays your career. It would be hard for you to make money so you could end up broke, which isn't a good thing if your raising a family.
If you don't make friends with someone who's not popular, 2 things could happen:
    1. You won't have any friends to cheer you up, which will make you miserable. Even if you make friends later, they won't last that long because you would be so unhappy.
    2. You would try to make friends with the "popular" people, which isn't the best idea. They will drag you into fights so the other people will assume that he/she has more power. Then they will move on and leave you in the dust with no friends and a bad reputation.
    3. If you don't make the effort to be nice, you may have trouble making friends, or you will become "popular" (see what happens at scenario 2, problem 2.)
    4. I think Parker makes very good choices and even if people call her a goody-goody, she knows that it will help her in the future.

  4. 1. Sometimes I fight with my sisters and I can be disrespectful to them. When I am disrespectful I need to apologize, but it is a hard thing to do.

    2. We live in a free world and everybody should be able to make their own decisions and choices, we are free to do so, but once we make a decision there are consequences that might be out of our control.

3.1 If you go to college you are more likely to get a better job, and make more money. You can also study something that interests you and when you grow up you can work in something you like.

3.2 If you eat healthy food your life would probably be of better quality and your risks of getting sick and dying soon are lower.

3.4 When you do an act of kindness, you feel better, your spirit feels great and is very rewarding to see the person you are helping being happy.

    1. I completely agree. You are always free, but there are always consequences you must deal with when making a choice.

    2. Sofia, I agree with you. We have to make our own choices. People do not have to choose for us because we live in a free society.

    3. Bless the United State of America. We do live in a democratic society that allows for choices and opportunities. I believe we are responsible for our choice and the responsibilities that come with that decision-making. Good thinking, Sofia.

    2. When you make a choice, thats your choice and you can't undo it. But the next time you can make a better choice.
3A. Going to college means you get a better education and a better job.
3B. Eating healthy foods means you are heathy.

    2. You have to live with the consequences of the choices you make.
    3.
    A. If you don't go to college you might as well work at a fast food store.
    B. If you aren't nice to the non popular people, one day you may need their help but why would they wanna help you once you weren't nice to them.
    C. Eating healthy food basically means you don't get sick in the future. For example: Eating popcorn or chocolate every single day for breakfast. You would get VERY sick.
    4. Well at gold rush one of my 4th grade classmates sat on a carpenter ant hill so when he got one sting he ran out like a cheetah. Also in third grade our sub was late so we were stuck outside of our classroom. Another different classmate went to the nearest teacher so we could go inside.

  7. 1a. not helping to put out and picking-up the trash on garbage day. I played outside instead of taking care of my responsibilities.

1b. i have raised my voice and made bad faces when arguing with my mom. Then she tells me "this is disrespectful".

    2. we believe by making a choice, sometimes that choice will work out for you in a good way, other times, in a bad way. each choice has a direct outcome that the chooser must deal with its consequences.

3a. the college consequence: by going to college, you are going to learn more, might become smarter, and have a good job. if you don't go to college, you won't learn as much, and your job may pay less.

3b. if i make a friend with someone who's not very popular, i may find out that they may be a really great person. they may have unique hobbies and like the same things i like.

3c. i like to do random acts of kindness, like helping younger kids who fall down, by picking them up and getting them to the nurse. i'm often concerned when kids get hurt.

    4. my friend evan demonstrates responsibility and makes good choices.

  8. 1.Sometimes I forget my backpack at home in the rush out to school. My mom had to drive all the way home to go and get it and bring it to me when she needed to be at work. Forgetting my backpack was disrespectful of her time.

    2. The choices you make will have a big impact on your life. For example, if you choose not to go to collage you may end up not having a good job or you may not be happy with what you have done with your life.

3a. If you eat junk food instead of healthy food you will end up overweight and may get diabetes or other illnesses. You may also get cavities. This could cost a lot of money on medical and dental expenses. If you didn't go to college you may not have this money and this could lead to other problems (i.e. homelessness etc.)

3b. If you do random acts of kindness you it will make you feel good about yourself and like you made someone feel good.
If you don't do a random act of kindness you wil probably feel bad about yourself for not helping them.

3c.If you don't join a social activity you won't get a chance to meet new people and step out of your comfort zone.

  9. 1. Sometimes I forget my glasses when I'm rushing out the door to go to school, clarinet practice, tennis practice, etc. I've made my mom to drop off my glasses which is disrespectful of my mom's time.
    2. The quote above means to me that once you make a big decision, you cannot undo the choice to decide again. One choice can change your whole life and the direction you want to go in.
    3.
    a. When you don't go to college then, you could become dumber, you probably won't be able to see your friends for a long time.
    b. When you eat too much junk food, you'll become very sick in the future, and eating to much unhealthy food can make you have more sickness.
    c. Doing a random act of kindness will make you a better person in life and in the future, people will be nice to you back. They will want to be friend with you in the future.
    d. Hanging out with friends can be a lot of fun, but you should still be in social club. Being in a social club, can teach you things and you could make new friends at the club.
    4. Kyle Taylor makes good choices in life and is really responsible. He is really respectful to everyone. If you are down in the dumps, he is there to brighten up your day.

  10. Write down what you think this quote means: "We are free up to the point of choice, then the choice controls the chooser.

This is the question that I thought was the most interesting because we often don't think of a choice as "controlling" us and yet - whatever we choose to do - bad or good, healthy or unhealthy, college or not, etc. determines certain outcomes. These outcomes are a direct result of our choices, for example: the likelihood of becoming overweight or sick if we choose a diet of junk food, or - alternatively, being healthy and strong if we eat good food. We all have the power to make our own decisions - so ultimately, the power is within us to choose wisely and benefit from the outcome.

  11. 1a. When I forget to do something or don't do what I was asked I sometimes make up and excuse.
1b. I am disrespectful to my mother when I continue to read at night even when she has told me to go to sleep.
    2. Once you make a choice you have to live with the consequences (good or bad). Some aspects you may be able to change but others not.
3.College: If you go to then you will be more knowledgeable and it will be easier to get a job if you go. If you don't it will be harder to get a job.
Healthy Food: A positive aspect is that you will have a lower risk for diabetes and heart disease.
Act of Kindness: if you do a random act of kindness you will get good karma.
    4. Our family friend Jennie runs an orphan care center with my aunt in South Africa it is called Kerus House Of Encouragement. It is a good choice because when we went there all of the kids looked happy.

  12. 1. When I was 5 years old, I swung my cat by it’s tail (& never told anyone). My cat never looked at me the same again. I was crushed and felt awful :-(

    2. The freedom to choose is powerful. We are very luck in this country – unlike other countries that have values & political systems that stifle people’s ability to choose.

    3. My thoughts...
    *College or bust
    *Eat healthy or die earlier
    *Being popular is overrated
    *Kindness = karma
*Clubs & friends are both cool, but I enjoy my alone time also.

    4. Red cross volunteers – they volunteer their precious time to others all over the world. They don’t have to do this, but it is their CHOICE. Those who give their time to others are making GREAT choices

    2. If you make a bad choice then that choice can affect you, like in The Tale of Desperaux there is a man that sold his child for a hen, red table cloth and a hand full of cigarettes that choice of selling his daughter for those things really affected him afterwards because he lost his child.
    3.
-If you don't go to college then you don't get a higher education and then you don't get a good job.
-If you eat junk you get cavities, sick and overweight.
-making friends with unpopular people makes you kind and you have more friends.
    - Mr. Frederick made a good choice on having a class that he has right now because he wants to help children build up their confidence by making them preform in front of people.
